Dancing, feasting, games, or simply chatting, it was a fun-filled day at the Kurdish Newroz (New Year) Celebration. Kurdish Newroz is a festival celebrating the beginning of spring and has come to represent new beginnings over the years. Therefore, it is one of the most important festivals in Kurdish culture.
Luke Services International was excited to co-host the 3/19 event with Kurdish Christian Church at El Monte County Park in El Cajon. Close to 200 attended the celebration. There were lots of dancing, food, fun time, games, and gifts. It was a joy to see everyone leaving with a big smile.
Once a quiet town, El Cajon (about 15 miles from San Diego, CA) is now home to a large Kurdish community; many fled their countries as a result of war. Since 2017, we have been working closely with other nonprofit organizations and local churches to extend care and support to our new neighbors in El Cajon.
